A distillery at the heart of Provence

Since 1898, our distillery in Forcalquier has embodied the essence of Haute Provence.

Nestling between the Alps and the Mediterranean, the distillery perpetuates ancestral know-how, where traditional distillation is at the heart of our creations. Each bottle tells a story, the story of our attachment to the region, to local plants and to Provençal traditions.

The birth of our distillery

The Distillerie de Lure was founded in 1898 in Forcalquier. Over the decades, it has seen a succession of passionate owners, including Henri Bardouin, a visionary who was fascinated by the plants of the hills of Provence.

In 1974, the distillery entered a new era under the management of Alain Robert and became ‘Distilleries et Domaines de Provence’. Some recipes, such as Farigoule and Gentiane de Lure, have remained unchanged since their creation, while others have been created over time to keep pace with new consumer trends.

Today, we are proud to offer unique spirits that combine authenticity, quality and modernity, while remaining true to the roots of our history.

The Provençal terroir : an inexhaustible source
of riches

The terroir of Haute Provence, and more particularly that of the Montagne de Lure, is at the heart of our distillery's identity. This unique region, situated between the Alps and the Mediterranean, has an exceptional climate, which encourages the growth of an incredible diversity of botanical species. Thyme, verbena, juniper, rosemary, sage, savory, wormwood, mugwort, angelica and many other aromatic plants thrive here thanks to this perfect combination of sunshine and freshness.

Each plant harvested in this Provençal terroir carries with it the soul of the region. By respecting the seasons and traditional harvesting methods, our artisan distillery captures the essence of these plants to create authentic spirits steeped in local flavours. It's this symbiosis with nature that gives our aperitifs and liqueurs their uniqueness, the source of a true sensory journey through the sun-drenched landscapes of Provence.

Why is our distillery based in Forcalquier ?

Our craft distillery is deeply rooted in Forcalquier, a typically Provencal village at the foot of the Lure mountains. This region, with its thousand-year-old tradition of peddlers and herbalists, is the birthplace of the expertise that has made our spirits so famous. The unique link between our distillery and this land stems from this ancient tradition, which is an integral part of our identity.

The choice of Forcalquier is not insignificant: it's a capital of taste and home to the European University of Flavours and Fragrances; it's a region with a privileged climate that offers a wide diversity of plants, enabling high-quality distillation and the creation of authentic spirits rooted in the Provençal soil.

The natural wealth of the Montagne de Lure

The mountain of Lure, which overlooks our distillery, is a veritable goldmine for botanists and plant lovers. Situated at the crossroads of the Alps and the Mediterranean, this region benefits from an exceptional microclimate that favours the presence of a varied and rich flora. Théodore Coste, a renowned 19th-century botanist, claimed that there were as many varieties of plant in this region as there were from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean.

This unique ecosystem has led to the development of a veritable culture of plants in the region, first exploited for therapeutic purposes, then for distillation. Plants such as thyme, verbena and wormwood, all hand-picked, are at the heart of our recipes and capture the essence of Provence in every spirit we produce.

A range of spirits evocative of Provence

Distilleries et Domaines de Provence boasts a wide range of spirits that reflect the rich flavours of Provence. Each spirit is made with local plants, carefully selected to offer a unique sensory experience.

  • Aperitifs: Our range of Provençal aperitifs includes must-tries such as Pastis Henri Bardouin, made with over 65 plants and spices, and Rinquinquin, an emblematic peach wine. Vermouth, a herbal wine with complex aromas, and Gentiane de Lure, with its slight bitterness, complete the range. You'll also find Noix de la Saint Jean, a spicy walnut wine, andOrange Colombo, an orange wine perfect for summer aperitifs.
  • Liqueurs: Our liqueurs are concentrates of Provence. Farigoule, a thyme liqueur, is a veritable ode to the vegetal and slightly lemony flavours of the local thyme flower. Génépi des Alpes, Douce Liqueur, andElisir Roux are creations with refined aromas, perfect for rounding off a meal or enhancing a cocktail.
  • Spirits: Our spirits include classics such as Gin XII, an artisanal gin made from 12 local plants and spices, and Absinthe ‘Absente’, a contemporary reinterpretation of the famous green fairy. Marc de Provence, a robust eau-de-vie, completes our collection of Provençal spirits.

Expertise handed down from generation to generation

Distillation is an ancient art that our craft distillery proudly perpetuates. Each stage, from harvesting to distillation, is carried out with care to guarantee the quality and authenticity of our products. Our traditional methods, handed down from generation to generation, are at the heart of our production. We use stainless steel stills to distil local plants, capturing all the essence and subtle aromas of Provence.

Respect for the environment is also a key value for our distillery. We are committed to using practices that respect nature, in keeping with the botanical richness of our region.

A distillery with an international reputation

Today, Distilleries et Domaines de Provence's influence extends far beyond the borders of Provence. Our specialities are sold in over 80 countries around the world, proof of the international recognition of the quality of our spirits. Each bottle exported is an invitation to escape to Provence, a land of flavours and traditions.
